"Volunteers tend to senior citizens' homes" by
Stewart Smith with the Katy Courier
Picture below is a few volunteers
with the The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch's Compassion
Katy. They are measuring and preparing the area
beside Ana Rojas' house for a new fence to be built.

There are
no less than three different types of siding on Redell
Scott's house, all of them faded, cracked and falling
apart. But thanks to the volunteers with the Katy
Homeowner's Association, Scott will have brand new
siding placed on her home free of charge.
Scott, 96, said she was blessed to have so many people
help her. "It is so wonderful to have someone
thinking about me," she said. "There are so many
things that go wrong around here and so many things that
need to be done. My husband used to do them all
and I can't get anyone to do them."
The homes of three other senior citizens were tended to
Saturday as well, including a new fence for 83-year-old
Ana Rojas, whose 86-year-old husband, Jose, is in
the hospital with cancer. "They are the Lord's
blessing," said Connie Williamson, a neighbor who helps
take care of Rojas.
Pat Baker, owner of the Katy Homeowner's Association,
said her volunteers, almost all of which are senior
citizens themselves, do projects like this throughout
the year with no expectation of payment in return.
"They are all helping each other," said Baker, a former
president of the local AARP chapter. "Seniors are
just so neat. This is our history and if we can't
help them, then what are we going to have? You
never know what is going to happen. In a couple
years, something may happen to you."
Several of Saturday's volunteers came from The
Fellowship at Cinco Ranch. Steve Walker, one of
the church's elders, said it was the perfect way to
focus the efforts of their Compassion Katy
outreach locally.
"The whole idea is to network with other churches and
let people out there know that there are others out
there who will serve and help those in need,"
Walker said. "There is need everywhere, but people
don't know it and that's what we do. We are trying
to be externally focused, that's what Compassion Katy
is all about."
