The American Dream: Shattered

The Brian family was living the American Dream. They enjoyed their custom home, new vehicles, great community, no real debt, and good jobs. As Katrina approached, their Grandmother had come to their home to park her car in the garage for safety. Their neighborhood had never flooded and so they thought everything would be well.

To be on the safe side the wife stocked up on pantry supplies and they traveled to Katy to ride out the storm. While in Katy, they watched in horror at the flooding and rain damage. They received word that their home was under 4 feet of water. They rented a one bedroom apartment; Grandma and the daughter slept in the living room with mom and dad in the bedroom.

Mrs. Brian went to Katy Christian Ministries and received basic food staples. As she was leaving the building, a lady asked her if she was from New Orleans. When she said yes the lady replied, “I have some things in the trunk you might be able to use.” When Mrs. Brian saw the trunk full of beddings, towels, pillows, and sheets, she broke down. “I never thought I would be shopping from some one’s trunk, and it was just what we needed.” She said, “I have always been the one to help people and have worked hard to take care of myself and my family.” She was overwhelmed with how God was watching out for them.

Then Mrs. Brian came into The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch one Friday, asking for assistance. To meet her immediate needs, Compassion Katy was able to bless her with a gift card to buy milk, eggs, and perishable foods. The receptionist also gifted them with some cash, since they had not received any Fema assistance yet. But God was not finished blessing them.

They attempted to connect with their employers but before anything was resolved Rita was barreling down for Katy, Texas. Diane, our Compassion Katy coordinator, had told them that if the hurricane was a four or five she would lead them up to Dallas area for safety.

Thursday morning they met to caravan at Starbucks. Those leaving from Katy happily ordered drinks, but those from New Orleans would not eat or drink. Their experience with hurricane evacuation told them not to eat or drink until they reached safety. Hours later, the caravan drove into a McDonalds which was trashed ridden, closed and just a sea of cars. Those from Katy realized why the New Orleans evacuees did not eat or drink, as bathrooms were almost non-existent. Twelve and a half hours later they all arrived safely in Dallas. After staying for a few days they were able to return. Upon returning, the husband and wife were able to connect with their employers and began work in Katy.

Because of the generous people supporting Compassion Katy, the Brian Family was evacuated from Rita and have also been in daily contact with them offering encouragement and resources.

The Brian family has been amazed that strangers would offer love, help, and hope but realize that it is all God. They look forward to the day when they can pass on the blessing by being able to donate to Compassion Katy.
