Boulder Church Makes Big Impact in Katy
Disasters have a way of uniting the church, not just in a community but across the country. That's what happened when Katrina hit and Katy, Texas became the destination of many fleeing the storms path. Jerry Edmonson, Lead Pastor of The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch, was in Omaha, Nebraska with a dozen other churches from across the country, participating in Leadership Network's "Externally Focused Church" learning community. As the storm hit and we all prayed, God began to show Jerry the opportunity that was before us to love our community in the name of Jesus. As Jerry shared his vision
with The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch leadership via a conference call just 2 days after the storm, The Fellowship's Community Impact Team leaped into action and CompassionKaty.org was born. At the same time, Jerry shared with those in Omaha what was happening in Katy. Every church was praying for what we were doing, but one church expressed a desire to do more, they wanted to partner. Adrian Boykin, Director of Community Outreach for Calvary Bible Church in Boulder, Colorado, was very interested in partnering with The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch to make a Kingdom sized impact in the lives of those who were being displaced by Katrina. As Jerry and Adrian talked, it became clear that God was bringing them together for such a time as this. When Adrian arrived back in Boulder he went to work sharing with his leadership and church about the difference they could make in the lives of many who were finding refuge in Katy, by partnering with The Fellowship and Compassion Katy. Just two weeks after the storm, Calvary took an offering and sent $23,000 to CompassionKaty.org to assist in meeting the needs of over 1,000 families who were seeking help and assistance in Katy.
Because of the generosity of Calvary, CompassionKaty.org has had ample resources to help with the immediate physical, emotional and spiritual needs of hundreds of families. The relief effort continues, from shelter and shots, to food and furnishing, as the partnership between Calvary Bible Church and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch continues to make a kingdom impact in the lives of so many.
